DYLON Fabric Dyes

Whole house smells of DYLON and the clothes smell great aswell.

I really should be giving this a zero star...and a five star. I've been using Dylon for years (though mainly blues and blacks and the maroon) and have always been delighted. However, I can concur with all the sandy beige negativity especially here; I've just had to dye a cream jacket which had a few blotches on and thought the beige would be perfect. Well, it looks as though it would have been wonderful, beautiful colour and very evenly dyed...except for all the blue streaks and dots in random places. The jacket is gonna be turned navy now, and yes I will be using Dylon as I have complete confidence. So, I'm guessing that Dylon has got some sandy beige issues to address. Overall, I would say my success rate now is about 24 perfects and one horror show.

After numerous washes my machine still leAves spots of black soot like stuff on my garments. Wouldn’t use this again.

I washed a number of black items, some new and some older. The colour is now patchy including a uniform top and a T-shirt I bought abroad in June. I won’t use Dylon colour detergent again.

Used the black washing machine pod to dye some blue-black jeans black. Followed the instructions exactly and also ensured we did a couple of dark washing machine cycles after to soak up any remaining dye. Plus thoroughly wiped down all the rubber seal, drum and inside of door but when we did a white bedding wash there were spots of dye all over the bedding. Had to spend two hours scrubbing bits of dye out of the fabric. Also the Dylon dye didnt really dye the jeans completely black - darker but not fully black. A lot of stress for £9.

Checked everything before I bought the dylon fabric dye. Right material, right washing machine, right programme, right preparation. Used y the recommended cycle....... nothing, no change on a 100% cotton dress, wasted money and time and now I've got to clean the washing machine....apparently it works on staining that

I used Sandy Beige to dye my skirt. It was my absolute favourite item of clothing that just needed a revamp. I truly trusted the process as the skirt was 100% cotton and I followed the guidelines exactly.

It is now completely destroyed, it is covered in blue splodges everywhere and pink streaks.

I can’t find the skirt again nor can I reverse this, I am truly gutted and so angry at dylon. They should not be selling this product.

Absolutely ruined my new washing machine 😡 I keep getting black stains on anything I wash, long after using Dylon! I've tried cleaning it with bleach and everything else suggested but nothing works. Awful company.

I'm absolutely mystified by all the terrible reviews on here - I've been using Dylon dyes, including all purpose, hand and machine dyes in various iterations for over 50 years!
I'm especially surprised at people claiming that the product didn't change the colour of their item - the only logical reason I can think of for that is that their item is made from a fibre which doesn't take the dye - and it is very clear on the packaging and their website which fibres will dye and which won't.
I've followed their instructions for all of their dyes, including the fibre of the item and the amount of fabric that can be dyed, and have literally never had a problem in dozens, if not hundreds of uses.
I noticed that someone said their customer service wanted to 'blame the customer' - presumably they mean that they were asked questions about how they used the dye and found to be using it incorrectly!
I don't even see how it would be technically possible to produce millions of packs of dye and for so many of them to just 'not work' - they would have gone out of business decades ago, rather than becoming one of the oldest and most respected dye companies in the world!

I’ve been using Dylon machine pods for about 20 years and always had good results, but then I tried Sandy Beige. I see several other reviewers had the same problem of pink, blue and purple dots on their clothes. Another reviewer suggested it’s because the instructions say to put the pod on wet fabric and I think they’re right. You do need to wash clothes before dyeing, but if anyone is brave enough to try beige I suggest drying the clothes first, because the moment the dye hits wet fabric it leaves spots. You would think the dye would even out during an hour in the machine, but apparently not. I’ve just ruined 3 quality cotton T-shirts and I can’t dye them dark enough to cover the spots, because then the pale stitching will show on the hems. Sigh.

The new Dylon detergent is improving some of my old items, so not a complete loss. I’m just surprised that a company as old as Dylon has got a product so wrong.

New pair of white linen trousers ruined by trying to dye them Smoke Grey. They are green with blue patches. Very expensive disaster.

I can’t see a way to edit my earlier review - one star in May 2026 - so I’ll just update on my experience here. I complained to Dylon customer services and, to cut a long story short, they told me the machine pods shouldn’t be used beyond two years of the date stamped on the bottom. Take note and check before you buy, although I’m dubious. Eventually, after some work, I received a refund for the original dye and the rectifying wash and dye products. I’m now happy with the jacket dyed mid blue rather than pale mauve.

Used the mauve machine dye as directed on a new off-white 100% cotton denim jacket. Wish I'd read these reviews beforehand because like many others report, my garment now has speckles and smears of blue all over. The mauve colour's nice but the jacket is not wearable. Really bad product that should be withdrawn from sale.

Zero stars. Completely ruined my bedding using a washing machine pod. I followed the instructions - pre wash followed by adding pod on a 40 degree cotton cycle. Result: clusters and streaks of dark purple spots and mustard splodges. My quality linen bedding now looks like horribly bruised skin. I’m devastated.

Used Smoke Grey to hand dye a custom made bench seat pad cover, followed instructions, absolutely no change in colour &completely ruined now with patchy grey splodges. How is this company getting away with selling dyes that are not fit for purpose. Customer service is next to useless. Cannot give a damn. A dye has only one job to do, will never use a Dyson product again EVER! 😡

Followed the instructions to the letter! Yet I have big lumps in my warm water dye mixture. I know this will just cause more blotches of could because it did in my last attempt. The fabric is still not the right colour and I’m on the fourth attempt. Will never use again.

I've used Sandy Beige twice to colour greying white towels which were in good condition but not as white as I wanted. I gave them a good hot wash beforehand and they were spotless. I followed the directions to the letter but the dye has ruined a bath sheet and bath mat. I wish I hadn't bothered. The dye and the electricity consumption in the whole process costs nearly as much as buying new bath towels. I just wanted to recycle and reuse rather than waste them or use them as dog towels. The beige colour seems problematic. Do not buy this unreliable product as it would damage your items and waste your money. Extremely disappointing.

If I could give zero starts I would. I'm extremly upset as I followed the instructions carefully. I had such terrible results, the dye ruined my bedroom carpet.. even after I washing the dyed clothing twice it still dripped black dye everywhere when I hung it up to dry, its also ruined the jumper and jeans I put in.

My bedroom carpet and hallway flooring is also ruined which was quite new. I'm extremely disappointed and upset.

Was going to discard 2 pairs of faded ‘black’ jeans but thought I’d try Dylon 10 washes for dark colours. It actually works. After only 2 washes faded to grey jeans now looking more black and don’t need to use any other detergent with it.

Utter crap product as usual by Dylon, got the black dye for my jeans as they started to fade, looked ok to begin with but after a few washes the colour drains right out of them, sick of these products that are supposed to restore colour but do nothing like ALL Dylon products...

Bad, doesn’t work at all and a waste of money. Tried to redye a pair of black jeans that had faded and I did exactly like the instructions said and I did redye them. But after just one wash they faded again like they was before I redyed them. The dye did not last at all! Do not buy this fabric dye. Just waste of money, because it doesn’t hold.

I used Dylon fabric dye pods (Espresso Brown) strictly according to the instructions, yet the result was severely flawed: all textiles developed a speckled/stained appearance despite correct temperature, program selection, and a reasonable load size (2.2 kg in a machine with a 6.5 kg capacity).

When contacting customer service at Henkel, several different and partly contradictory explanations were given for the failed dyeing:
First, it was claimed that the drum had been “almost full,” despite the load corresponding to roughly one third of the machine’s capacity. With pictures a proof of this.

Then it was suggested that “invisible stains” from skincare products or styling agents could have caused the issue. Maybe? But then there should he a warning on the pod, right?

Finally, it was argued that the machine used was a “laundromat machine” and therefore not permitted under the instructions. The issue with this is that the term used in the instructions corresponds to what in normal language refers to a laundromat facility, not an individual washing machine located in a shared residential laundry room. This distinction is not clearly communicated on the retail packaging, which simply

Something is fundamentally wrong with the described dyeing process: You are instructed put wetted clothes into the washing machine and put the dye powder pod (Grey) on top. When the washing machine starts rotating, but yet without any water in it, the powder spills out over the wet clothes and leaves a pattern of STRONGLY dyed spots and splotches that DO NOT DISAPPEAR again!. When you remove the clothes after the dyeing cycle, these strongly dyed spots and splotches remain, and effectively ruin the clothes (the remainder of the dyed material looks OK, though, but he clothes are effectively ruined.)

Seems good initially, I have no idea how it will be after further washes with regular water… but it completely restored colour to a semi deep, rather deep bleached patch on my blue jeans. Quite surprised actually. But I wasn’t washing with any other clothes I cared about so can’t speak of how cautious to be as per other reviews.

I’ve always liked Dylon detergent — my first purchase was excellent, with the usual pleasant fragrance and great washing results. However, my second purchase from Tesco (postcode BS32 8EF) was completely different. The scent was unpleasant, and the results after washing were disappointing.

The company confirmed that the product is genuine, but whether the formula has changed or these bottles weren’t authentic, I’m not sure. Either way, I won’t be buying this product again. Very disappointing compared to my first experience

It’s the new back to black washing detergent I’m disappointed with. Every time I use it my clothes smell damp, even when dried in a tumble dryer.

I have used Dylon before on towels and it worked brilliantly. They still look good after years. Not this time though. I bought the Smoke Grey All in one fabric dye to use on some small hand towels. It was useless. They are pale green, and some have purple/pink patches. Ruined the towels and completely useless. It was very expensive too at £7.99. I am livid.

Well I read the reviews and pondered on using the upholstery dye but bit the bullet and did my sofa covers . I used the local launderette as machine much bigger and got permission to use it. I’m very pleased with the end result . I used forest green on a cream covered sofa . It’s currently drying on the line, fingers crossed it hasn’t shrunk, but coverage is great, easy to follow instructions if shrinkage hasn’t occurred this has saved me loads of money x
